Halloween Thrift Flip Decor
If you’ve ever shopped at the thrift store, then you probably have seen some scary looking things on a normal day… Well I decided to thrift a few decor pieces and turn them into intentionally-scary decor for Halloween.
I’ll show you the DIYs in the video below, then a few comments about what I did under that!
Halloween Wall Sconces
Here are the sconces I DIYed first. I will admit, I didn’t find these at the thrift store. My dad found them on a job and thought they could make good Halloween decor, so he gave them to me to transform. I didn’t make major changes, but that’s what I came up with!
The first thing I did was remove the crystals and take the original light fixture off.
Once that was done, I gave both a really nice clean with a damp rag.
My original plan was to spray paint these with a hammered bronze paint. But I decided I love the patina on the sconces already and the antique effect was too pretty to cover up.
So that means the main part of the transformation will be making it so the candle holders will hold these battery-operated candles.
This isn’t the best solution, but I found the candles will sit in the plastic that surrounded the original bulbs. So I cut those down to size. I think using a copper pipe cap from the hardware store would be the safest route to take for this.
I then gave them a coat of gold spray paint that I just had on hand.
Next, I needed a way to hold the metal base onto the sconce… I had to be creative and the idea I thought of was filling the hole with hot glue.
Once the glue cooled, I took a washer and screw and screwed the base into the hot glue. It seemed to work well.
After that, I used a ton of hot glue to hold the plastic to the bases.
I then re-attached the crystals
And as a finishing touch, draped faux spider webs over the sconces.
Christmas to Halloween lantern transformation
The next item I picked up was actually a Christmas lantern. I had actually been wanting a lantern for forever for my every day decor. I noticed the glass can be removed, so I thought it was the perfect base for a Halloween thrift flip.
I started by removing the glass from the lantern
Then I gave it a good clean.
I set the lantern aside and took this small foam pumpkin from Walmart and traced a tea light around the top.
After that, I used a craft knife to cut the pumpkin and remove some of the foam where the light will go.
You could stop there, but I wanted to make this into a jack-o-lantern, so I used a marker to draw a face onto the pumpkin
My first idea was to just color the face in, but then I decided to carve out the face with my craft knife too.
The next thing I did was put the tea light back in the top of the pumpkin, then used hot glue to look like wax dripping. I was careful not to glue the light down because you’ll need to be able to turn it on and off.
After that, I painted in the jack-o-lantern face with black acrylic paint and then painted the wax drips with white acrylic paint.
Next, I used some Spanish moss from Dollar Tree and placed that in the bottom of the lantern.
Then, since the glass was gone, I spread a thin layer of faux spider web around the lantern. I made sure to leave the back mostly open so that I could add in the pumpkin and have access to the tea light.
DIY Pumpkin Basket
Probably the simplest, but my favorite thrift flip in the entire post. I took a cute little basket and turned it into a pumpkin. I love this DIY because you can do it to baskets of many shapes and sizes. I also decided to make mine into a planter for a little faux plant I had at home.
I started by wiping down the basket, just like I did with the other two items.
Then I painted the entire basket with orange acrylic paint.
After the paint is dry, it’s time to make the jack-o-lantern face
All I did was cut some black felt to make the face, then used hot glue to attach it to the basket.
